After the death of its chair and only remaining full time faculty member in 2005, Dr. David Pingree, the president of Brown University and then Provost Zimmer decided to close the History of Mathematics department, thus snuffing out a branch of scholarship that had flourished at Brown for close to 60 years.

Texts Produced by the Department

To compile a complete list of the texts and articles produced by the Department, its faculty and graduate students would take take months - if not longer - to compile. Dr. Pingree himself produced over 40 books or monographs and over 200 articles. I present here only a brief, but hopefully representative list of what the Department produced.

A (somewhat) complete bibliography of David Pingree’s work is avalaible in Studies in the History of the Exact Sciences in Honour of David Pingree, eds. C. Burnett, J. P. Hogendijk, K. Plofker, and M. Yano, Leiden, 2004, 890 pp

A bibliography of Neugebauer's work can be found in " Otto Neugebauer: Bibliography, 1925-1979”, Centaurus: International Magazine of the History of Science and Medicine, 22 (1979), 258-280. by Sachs, Janet & Toomer, Gerald J.

A bibliography a A. Sachs' work can be found in “Bibliography of the Published Works of Abraham Sachs”, in: E. Leichty, M. de J. Ellis & P. Gerardi (eds.), A Scientific Humanist: Studies in Memory of Abraham Sachs (Kramer Fund, Philadelphia, 1988 [= Occasional Publications of the Samuel Noah Kramer Fund, nr. 9]), pp. 377-378. By Pingree.
